"The Roycroft Campus:
as if Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters never left"

Starting to work on Sat. am, Nov.4, 2006 in the Copper Shop Gallery

2008 Spring Screen Printing Class at the Copper Shop – In the new Roycroft Campus Corporation Gallery, exhibit space and classroom directly across from the Roycroft Inn.

Roycroft Renaissance Master Artisan Dorothy Markert is offering a two day plus class in her own technique of screen printing. The images will be painted directly on the screens and each color will be printed separately, one on top of the other to build up to the finished print. This method is in keeping with the Roycroft philosophy of hand craft. The screen printing supplies are all water based and non toxic.

All materials will be provided so that each student can create and take home an edition of their own original prints as well as Dorothy’s complete manual and a screen complete with backing board and hinges that they can use for future work. She will correspond with registered students so that they can work up their designs before the class. She will have books of copyright designs that they can use in class.

The history and development of screen printing will be discussed; she will have a collection of books on the subject for the students to see. Arts and Crafts design will be stressed.

Screen printing, the most direct and painterly of the printing mediums is also the latest to attain the status of an art form. This technique lends itself to working at home, without the large investment necessary in other printmaking processes.

The class will begin on Friday night, March 28, 2008, 7-9 PM with a cocktail hour/ icebreaker/demonstration and continue on Saturday and Sunday, March 29 & 30, 10 AM – 5 PM (with a lunch break) both days. Saturday lunch and Sunday brunch will be at the Roycroft Inn.

We have recently finished a series of mini-classes held on Sunday afternoons at the Copper Shop in 2007. We will be offering them again - I'm just not sure when. The description follows:

All materials will be supplied. Each student will make a few prints to take home and some to share with the other students. A sheet of printed instructions and materials list will be provided.1 PM – 4 PM, $30 + 10 material fee

 Basic one color screen printing.

Learn this simple method of creating a stencil on a screen. The class will use their own images or some copyright free Arts and Crafts designs that I will have available. They will each print their image onto paper or fabric. A simple drawing or “found art” can be transformed into an original print, greeting cards, quilt blocks etc. Only one color printing will be addressed, but the basic method can be used for multicolor printing. All materials used are non-toxic and water base.

There are many other classes scheduled at the Copper Shop Gallery. For a complete listing go to http://www.roycroftcampuscorporation.com/courses.htm

Please Note: students are responsible for transportation and accommodations as well as breakfast and dinner.
A list of local restaurants will be supplied as well as lodging.
